All About Mantle Clocks

Mantle Clock

In every home there are clocks. Many people own a clock for nearly every room in the house. Everyone uses alarm clocks to wake them up in the morning. Kitchen clocks are also very helpful for timing food or just seeing what time it is. Some types of clocks, like a mantle clock, have been around since the late 17th century. They were fairly cheap clocks, which is probably why they were so popular during the 18th and 19th century. Whatever type of clock you own, most clocks are functional as well as decorative.

If you have a nice mantle or shelf then it's nice to have a decorative mantle clock to help you tell the time. Many old mantle clocks would last at least 30 hours and some lasted as much as eight days, before they needed to be wound up again. This type of clock was usually made of wood and brass. Some mantle clocks even had ormolu in them. Ormolu is a fine pounded gold, that turns out looking bronze. Porcelain is also a common material found in mantle clocks. Whatever type of material they use to build them, mantle clocks are very old fashion and can help your home look more distinguished.

There are a lot of very old mantle clocks that people can purchase at auction. If you are a collector of clocks you might want to buy one that is an antique. Some of these clocks can get really expensive. At auction you could pay from $150 dollars to even $2,500 for an old mantle clock. Depending on the type of clock you want to buy, you could easily spend even more than that. If you are looking for a clock that is just decorative to sit on your shelf, then you probably wouldn't want to invest in an antique.

Clocks today vary in all types of shapes and sizes. They are made from plastic, metal or wood. Most mantle clocks are made from wood but also have many other materials in the clock itself. What is neat about an old mantle clock is that you wind them up instead of buying batteries. These clocks can be cheap or very expensive. If you want an antique, you are bound to pay a lot more for your clock.  No matter what the price, if you want a very beautiful and decorative clock to accent the decor of your home you could buy a mantle clock.
