Long Case Grandfather

The Grandfather Clock Story

Long Case Grandfather

The most interesting part of a clock is its movement. Without the movement the hands would be stationary and there would be no chime.  In a grand father,  or loncase clock, the movement is either a one day or an eight day.
The one day is designed to provide up to thirty hours of running so the clock needs to be wound once a day.  The eight day clock would require winding once a week.  Winding is accomplished by pulling the chain down over the sprockets until the weight are in the full upright position.  Some clocks are designed with two weights,  one for the clock work and one for the chimes.  Others are designed with only one weight to handle both functions.
Many of the newer grand father clocks come with a variety of chimes that can be regulated with a switch.  A different tune can be selected varying from the traditional Westminster Chimes to the  Whittington chimes or the St. Michael's chimes.  The Westminster chimes originated from the church of St Mary the Great, Cambridge England, the Whittington chimes from the church of St. Mary le Bow in London, England and the St. Michael's chimes from the St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
While those are the chimes most heard from a grand father clock,  the music most associated with the clock is from a bluegrass song written in 1876 by Henry Clay Work.  It was at the height of its popularity in the 1950's and 1960's and told the story of a grand father clock whose life was tied to a man from ehe day he was born until the day he died.
Today there are many clock workers that manufacture and sell these magnificent clocks.  No matter whether you purchase your clock as an antique grand father clock or as a modern reproduction,  you will have a classic piece of furniture for your home.   Many of them come with ornate cabinetry in which the weights,  chains, and pendulums are available for all to view.  Because a long trunk is needed to house the length of the pendulum, the clock becomes a tall and impressive addition to the new owner's home.
