Cuckoo Clocks

Cuckoo Clocks Have Not Changed Much Over The Last Few Centuries

Cuckoo Clocks

Cuckoo Clocks have been around for centuries. They are recognizable by anyone who hears the familiar cuckoo bird at the top of the hour or at the half-past signal. The clock chimes and the cuckoo pops out to alert you of the time of day by the number of "cuckoos" you hear. The clocks are usually ornately created with excellent carvings and craftsmanship to show the care and dedication that goes into the creating of each clock.

From the Black Forest of Germany where the original cuckoo clocks were created, the inside mechanism is still the same. Today's version may have replaced the all-wood with metal and plastic, the idea and characteristics are basically the same. The counterbalances and weights that keep the clock accurate, and the sounds of the cuckoo bird that chirps out the time have not changed in nearly three centuries. Most clocks have three weights which are responsible for the power of the clock. They have to be pulled every once in a while to keep the power going.

The Black Forest cuckoo clocks operate on a set of wheels that lock gears which provide the power to swing the pendulum back and forth. One tooth of the wheel is released from the escape wheel every time the pendulum makes a complete swing from side to side. When the tooth moves, the minute hand moves a little at a time. You can adjust the weights at the bottom of the clock until you have it keeping time accurately.

Cuckoo Clocks can come in many different styles. There are those that have a bird that comes out and cuckoos alone and there are those clocks that have scenes usually of German life taking place and the bird comes out and cuckoos after the action. For example, some clocks have scenes resembling German life and celebration, such as Oktoberfest. Characters can have movement of drinking or dancing and then when the action is done, the cuckoo bird pops out and sounds the time with the number of cuckoos to match.

Collectors are interested in the original cuckoo clocks of the Black Forest and even others that have been created over time to show the architecture of chalets. carved and shield clocks. They are different in presentation, yet still work on the same theme of the counter-balance of weights and the movement of the hands to keep the time.
