Antique Wall Clocks - A Facinating History

Antique Wall Clocks

Just like all valuable pieces of history, antique wall clocks can simply grab your attention.  Whether it's a casual moment in time or a life long passion, clocks are truly an amazing feat.

The sun dial itself was an incredible accomplishment of math and science.  Imagine that ancient people just decided one day that it might be good to measure how long the sun would be up and from there, the months and seasons.  It's truly is all history from that point.

The first pendulum clocks came along when a the dutch discovered a more precise way to tell time.  Since batteries had not yet been invented, an original pendulum clock would not be one with a battery attachment.  Pendulum clocks were able to hang on a wall and would now be considered an antique wall clock.  Pendulum clocks that sit on the floor would be known as a grandfather clock.

Another antique wall clock is the cuckoo clock.  First invented in Germany, the cuckoo clock is characterized by it's resemblance to a house and weight driven movement.  Every hour the cuckoo bird inside the clock pops out and chirps its familiar cuckoo.  The creativity of cuckoo clocks give each one it's own unique personality.

Antique wall clocks from France are elaborate and include bronze and gold leafing.  Likewise the intricate art work and careful attention to detail make these clocks a beautiful piece to collect. Americans got into the clock making scheme with banjo clocks.  The banjo clock became a popular choice of clock during the 19th century.  The banjo clock was also a pendulum clock, but the pendulum was hidden from view by the outside case and ornamentation.  It was the pendulum hiding case that gave this clock it's look and thus its name.

Once electricity could be harnessed into batteries, the clock industry began a new era of wall clock.  This is about the time we begin to find advertising clocks emerge.  Companies like CocaCola and Budweiser had wall clocks mass produced and you would find these clocks in places like your local diner.  Yes, these clocks could still enter your antique wall clock collection, they just need to be approximately fifty years old to be considered an antique.

So, whether your passion is collecting antique clocks or simply viewing them in a history museum, take the time to enjoy this fascinating world of clocks.
